Bhangra Workshop

Bhaṅgṛā (pronounced [pə̀ŋɡɽaː]Listen) refers to the traditional dance originating in the Majha area of the Punjab region of India.  Free form traditional Bhangra originated in Punjab, India and modern Bhangra was developed by the Punjabi diaspora. All CB Summer Intensive students will have this exciting workshop with guest teachers Arnab Sarker and Silky Kadakia!     ARNAB SARKER Arnab is an experienced dancer, coach, captain, and competition judge. At Georgetown University, Arnab was captain of the undergraduate bhangra team, Georgetown Jawani, and later joined the DC Metro Punjabi Arts Academy (DCMPAA) as a coach and dancer. Sarker has extensive experience working with dancers of all ages and styles and has coached both live and music performances. Now as a medical and business student, Sarker continues to give back to the community through DCMPAA, judging competitions like Big 10 Bhangra, GOT Bhangra, Bhangra Blowout, Hilltop Hungama, and coaching the UVA School of Medicine Bhangra group – Punjabi MD.       SILKY KADAKIA Silky started dancing at the age of 5 with formal training in Odissi from Sudha Grover and the Sudamini Dance Academy. In high school, Silky accompanied her academy and Guru Harekrishna Behra on an Odissi Dance Tour, performing in 7 shows throughout India. During the following two summers, she taught Odissi and semi-classical dance to children at Manav Sadhna, a non-profit organization in Ahmedabad, India. Silky completed her Manch Pravesh (solo debut dance recital) in 2008. At college, Silky’s passion for dance evolved as she joined Georgetown University’s Bhangra team. She also coordinated Georgetown’s South Asian Show, Rangila, which consisted of 11 dances and over 500 participants. Through the years, Silky choreographed and taught a variety of different dance styles ranging from classical, Bollywood, Raas, and Bhangra. During Rangila her senior year, she choreographed a Bhangra piece with 112 dancers. Currently, Silky is a member of the competition team and staff at the DC Metro Punjabi Art Academy (DCMPAA). Silky graduated with a BA in Government and Studio art and is a federal consultant. When not dancing, Silky enjoys photography and graphic design.
