Chance To Dance

Students from the 2013 Chance To Dance Program in the Greene County Public Schools (funded in part by the Dave Matthews “Bama Works Fund” of the CACF).

Chance To Dance is Charlottesville Ballet’s after-school dance program that gives children a hands-on experience with the arts.

Chance To Dance (C2D) is Charlottesville Ballet’s after-school outreach program for grades K-5 that gives underserved children a hands on experience with the arts. The Ballet partners with local public schools in both Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Students participate in a session of dance classes held once per week after school. These classes are taught by professional artists from the Charlottesville Ballet and are all-inclusive with students actively participating regardless of physical ability or previous dance experience. The dance genres of Ballet, Modern, Tap, Hip Hop, and African dance form the backbone of the Chance To Dance curriculum. Participants are introduced to basic movements and then hone these skills throughout the program. Students see the benefit of applying themselves to both mental and physical challenges and gain self-confidence while learning effective teamwork skills that can be used in other areas of life.

The Chance To Dance Objectives:

• For students to gain self confidence and an internal locus of control while learning effective teamwork skills.

• To help students adopt the lifelong healthy habit of exercise through the joy of movement.

• To understand how to count music of different genres and to be able to successfully perform these genres for an audience.

Chance To Dance Showcase and Scholarship Program:

The Chance To Dance program culminates with a FREE performance for the community at the participating school. This gives students the opportunity to perform for their peers, educators, and broader community. The showcase is a chance for students to take pride in their achievements, and develop the self-confidence that results from successful performances. At the showcase, Charlottesville Ballet presents two students (from each participating school) who show exceptional talent and passion for dance with lifetime scholarships to Charlottesville Ballet Academy.

Mission:  The Chance to Dance program gives under-served children access to dance education through scholarship programs and fosters a life-long appreciation for the arts.
