Celebrating Charlottesville Ballet – Special Event

CELEBRATING CHARLOTTESVILLE BALLET

Enjoy wine and light hors d’oeuvres as we learn how the Ballet continues to elevate the art of dance in our evolving world.

Keynote speaker Brandye Lee (dancer with Alvin Ailey, Disney’s “The Lion King,” and MFA from UC Irvine) will share her journey and experience working with Charlottesville Ballet. Her choreography will be featured at the Paramount Theater in the “Connections” production on May 7, 2022.

The professional company dancers will also treat us to a short performance and we’ll gather for an evening celebrating the Ballet’s work in our community!

Please bring these items with you on December 1 for the event:

-Vaccine card (physical copy or picture on your phone) or proof of a negative PCR test or a negative antigen test professionally administered within 72 hours prior to 4:30pm on Dec. 1

-Valid photo ID. 

-Masks: required for all individuals inside The Center regardless of vaccination status, except while actively eating or drinking in your seats or designated area at the rear of the auditorium. Seating in the auditorium will be physically distanced for the presentation.


Meet the Keynote Speaker – Brandye Lee

Brandye Lee holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from University of California at Irvine focusing on issues of equity and diversity in ballet and she is a cum laude alumna of Smith College (Economics & Afro-American Studies). A native of Washington, DC, Brandye received her formal dance training as a scholarship student at Jones-Haywood School of Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem and The Ailey School. She a was a featured dancer with Ailey II and Disney’s blockbuster “The Lion King” – National Gazelle Tour. While touring with The Lion King, Brandye served as the company’s outreach coordinator, creating unique behind-the-scenes experiences that included the show’s phenomenal cast, crew and orchestra members. Throughout her travels, she has produced numerous concerts benefiting community arts and education organizations. Brandye has been a guest performer and teacher in many of the 47 states she toured, including at Flint Institute of Music, Dance Institute of Washington, Dance Theatre of Lynchburg, Troy D. Brown’s Art of Technique, Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, George Mason University, University of Tennessee, Fisk University, Rhodes College, Marymount University, and countless others. Most recently, Brandye served as Rehearsal Director for Memphis, Tennessee’s groundbreaking ballet company and conservatory, Collage Dance Collective. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including Sidwell Friends School’s Distinguished Alumni Award. She is also a New Memphis Institute Fellow and served two terms as a commissioner for the Memphis City Beautiful Commission. In 2021, Brandye was on faculty for Charlottesville Ballet’s Summer Intensive program and we are honored to showcase her choreography for the professional company’s 2021-22 season. Through her lifelong passion of dance, she continues to find innovative ways to let her life speak and serve her community.

Meet the Artists

Abigail Brent

Abigail Brent began dancing with Charlottesville Ballet Academy at its inception in 2007. She was invited to join the Pre-Professional program when it was created in 2015. She spent summers training on scholarship with American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey, School of American Ballet, Chautauqua, and Richmond Ballet. She was accepted into The Kennedy Center’s Master Ballet Class Series, enhancing her training in classes with NYCB, ABT, Ballet West, Mariinsky Ballet, National Ballet of China, San Francisco Ballet, and several internationally known contemporary companies. After a year as a Trainee with the Charlottesville Ballet, she was promoted to Apprentice Dancer in 2019. She has enjoyed performing many roles, including The Nutcracker’s Spanish and Dew Drop, and the Step-Sister in Cinderella. Abigail is thrilled to be a Company Artist and on the faculty of Charlotteville Ballet Academy teaching the next generation of talented young dancers.

Kathryn Tokar

Kathryn is originally from Cleveland, Ohio and holds a B.A. in Dance Performance with a minor in Biology from Mercyhurst University. Kathryn began her professional dance career as a founding member of the new Cleveland Ballet, and has also danced with Lake Erie Ballet, North Pointe Ballet, and Deos Contemporary Ballet in the Midwest region. Kathryn relocated to Virginia to join the Charlottesville Ballet as a Trainee for the 2017-18 season, and was promoted to Apprentice in 2019.  In addition to being a Company Artist this season, she also teaches in the Academy (CBA) , the Chance To Dance (C2D) outreach program, and Movement For Parkinson’s classes. Kathryn is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Arts in Medicine through the University of Florida and plans to help expand the CB Moves community engagement programs in the future.

Katherine Nies, Pianist

Katherine Nies is a classically-trained musician with more than 17 years of experience in piano performance, vocal performance, and accompanying. She graduated summa cum laude from Albertus Magnus College with a Bachelor of Arts in English, Spanish, and Creative Writing. After spending a summer studying linguistics at Georgetown University, Katherine combined her love of music and visual arts by diving into cinematography, producing two short films, acting and singing in West Side Story, and Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and performing with orchestras and other ensembles. She has been a resident of New England, D.C., and Honolulu, and is now back in Virginia, collaborating with musicians and performing. She is thrilled to be a part of Charlottesville Ballet’s wonderful community of artists.

Mary Dalton, Cellist

Mary Dalton is a classically trained cellist having concertized with orchestras, chamber groups, and as a soloist for over 35 years.  She has trained in the studios of several nationally recognized cellists, as well as participated in acclaimed musical festivals throughout her years.  In recent years, Mary has pursued non-classical routes, composing/improving cello lines for various bands, musicians and directors pursuing the heart-string pulling sounds of the cello.  Recently, she has ventured into songwriting and enjoys every second of collaborating with fellow songwriters all over the country.  Hailing originally from Richmond, Mary graduated with a B.A. from Washington and Lee University, as well as an MBA from the University of Richmond.  Currently, she splits her time between Charlottesville and Lynchburg with her husband and four daughters.  

Meet the Ballet’s Artistic Team

 

Sara Clayborne, Co-Director

Originally from New York, Sara trained at the Ballet School of New York under the direction of Diana Byer and Sallie Wilson. In 2001, she graduated from the Professional Children’s School in New York City and began to dance professionally with New York Theatre Ballet. While dancing with NYTB, Sara had the opportunity to tour the United States and perform at the Florence Gould Hall in New York City. In 2004, Sara moved to Richmond, Virginia to join the Richmond Ballet trainee program. While at the Richmond Ballet, she performed with the professional company in such ballets as The Sleeping Beauty, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and original choreography by Richmond Ballet faculty. She danced with Richmond Ballet for two years before being asked to join Starr Foster Dance Project. In 2007, Sara co-founded the Charlottesville Ballet, putting her myriad of experiences to work while keeping her love of performance alive in her dual role as dancer and director. She retired from the stage in 2012 in order to devote her time to the growth of Charlottesville Ballet.

 

Emily Hartka, Co-Director

Emily Hartka fell in love with ballet at the age of five and began dance classes at Roanoke Ballet Theatre in her hometown of Roanoke, VA. She attended summer intensives at the American Ballet Theatre and on scholarship with the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Emily spent her senior year of high school at the Virginia School of the Arts in Lynchburg, VA and danced as a trainee with the Richmond Ballet. In 2008, she relocated to Charlottesville to found the Charlottesville Ballet and to attend the University of Virginia, where she completed her Bachelor of Arts in Nonprofit Management & Arts Administration. Emily serves as Co-Director and leads the marketing and development efforts of Charlottesville Ballet. In 2019, she completed training in the Dance for PD® program by the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn, NY and is excited to grow the CB’s Movement for Parkinson’s program. Emily is thankful to all who have made this journey possible and looks forward to the Ballet’s 14th season.

 

Keith Lee, Artist Laureate, Director of Diversity & Inclusion, and Resident Choreographer

Keith Lee–Artist Laureate, Resident Choreographer, and Director of Diversity & Inclusion–is a master teacher and choreographer originating from the Bronx, New York where he trained at the High School of Performing Arts in NYC. In 1969 Mr. Lee joined American Ballet Theatre and was promoted to the rank of soloist the following year. He then pursued his career at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre as their ballet master. He has choreographed works for American Ballet Theatre, the Washington Ballet, the Geneva Ballet, the Oakland Ballet, the Garden State Ballet, Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, the Lexington Ballet, and the Charlottesville Ballet. Mr. Lee now calls Central Virginia home, and continues to work as a freelance choreographer, teacher, and performing arts coordinator. Mr. Lee is excited to expand his role of Director of Diversity & Inclusion for the Charlottesville Ballet.

 

Caitlin Lennon, Artistic Associate & Director of Repertoire

Caitlin Lennon, originally from Bozeman, Montana, began her intensive training at the Queen City Ballet in Helena, Montana. She spent her summers studying at Juilliard, American Ballet Theatre in New York, Atlanta Ballet, Houston Ballet, and Ballet West on scholarship. Her travels across the country ended at the Richmond Ballet, where she was accepted into the trainee program on full scholarship and danced for two seasons. She also taught dance in the public schools with Richmond Ballet’s Minds In Motionprogram from 2007-2015. In 2008, Caitlin joined the Charlottesville Ballet as a founding member of the professional company. From 2015-2019, Caitlin worked as the Company Manager for the professional company, in addition to continuing her performances as a dancer. In March of 2019, Caitlin retired from the stage and accepted the role of Director of Repertoire, continuing her work with the professional company and trainee program. In addition to her work with Charlottesville Ballet, Caitlin is a licensed Realtor ® in the state of Virginia. Caitlin is looking forward to her 14th season with Charlottesville Ballet!
